Sell Startup Data When Shutting Down: What to Do First
Your Slack, email and tickets might be one of the last assets with real value. Here's how to keep it and sell it before the accounts go dark.
This page is one part of our guide on how to shut down a company.
Before you cancel Slack, Google Workspace, Jira or GitHub, export everything and keep the accounts live until you know what the data is worth. Reported shutdown deals have run $10,000 to $100,000 (Forbes, Apr 16, 2026), and one former CEO sold her startup's Slack, email and Jira history for hundreds of thousands. Request an offer from a direct buyer and compare it with what a wind-down platform offers.
Before you sell startup data, do this before cancelling anything
- Stop deleting. Keep former employees' accounts active.
- Export Slack, email, CRM, tickets and code. Start with the Slack, Gmail and Jira guides.
- Note the size and years of history for each system.
- Check customer contracts for data restrictions.
- Get a value estimate and at least one written offer.
- Only then cancel subscriptions.
Wind-down platform or direct buyer?
| Wind-down platform | Direct buyer | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Data sale bundled with the shutdown | Separate license with one counterparty |
| Reported payouts | $10K to $100K (Forbes, Apr 16, 2026) | $100K to $2M+ for operating records |
| Fees | Usually a share of proceeds | None to you |
| Best if | You want one firm handling everything | You want the best net price for the data |

Who decides, and who gets the money
The board usually needs to approve sales of company assets, and proceeds go through the normal wind-down order: creditors first, then investors under their preferences, then common shareholders. Tell your shutdown lawyer about the data sale early.
Code is an asset too
AI companies also buy startup codebases. See selling your startup's source code.
Timing matters
Subscriptions renew, retention windows close and admins leave. The data is only worth something while you can still export it. You can request an offer from Polyshares before you finalize the shutdown plan.

Common questions
Can I sell my startup's Slack data when shutting down?
Yes. Startups have reported deals from $10K to $100K (Forbes, Apr 16, 2026), and some much higher. Export before you cancel.
Should I use a wind-down platform to sell data?
It's convenient if you're using them for the shutdown. Compare their net payout with a direct buyer's offer.
Who gets the money from a data sale in a shutdown?
It goes through the normal wind-down order, creditors first. Ask your shutdown lawyer.
When should I start?
Before cancelling any software. Once a workspace is deleted, there's nothing left to sell.
